"The greater danger for most of us lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low, and achieving our mark” Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni 1475-1564
Whether you take your inspiration from the great Master himself or John Atkinson and colleagues in their research on why motivation peaks (Atkinson & Litwin 1960) it’s fascinating to see that when challenges are too hard they become over-powering and a turn-off; yet when too easy not energising or stimulating enough. So to ensure your goals, or those of your team, have the best chance of success set them at the 50-50 level because the point at which people feel they have about a 50% chance of winning is the same point at which motivation peaks.
